March 9, 2012, marks the 15-year anniversary of The Notorious B.I.G.’s death and XXL is paying tribute to the late, great Brooklyn MC with a special issue dedicated to his legacy.
Similar to the honorary issue dedicated to Tupac Shakur and the 15th anniversary of his passing, released by XXL in September of 2011, the XXL team spoke to some of those closest to Big for an in-depth look into his life and death. From his kids T’Yanna and Christopher “CJ” Wallace and their mamas, Jan Jackson and Faith Evans, to his closest friends like members of Junior M.A.F.I.A. and others, many got their chance to share stories and more to pay homage to the beloved MC. Most even disclosed rare, never-before-published photos of Biggie from their personal collections, which are featured in this month’s issue. Since Big was one of the most swagger-jacked rappers of all time, there’s a list of the 100 best Biggie bites, a look a what The Notorious One might have looked like at 40-plus, and much more.
Even though the issue is a Big tribute there’s much more in the mag to look forward to. It’s been 15 years since 1997, arguably the best year in hip-hop music, and XXL explores that very notion with a detailed essay. There’s also a look back at 2011’s rap music with a recap of the five best albums, mixtapes, verses, producers and singles of the year.
Check out XXLMag.com for an entire month’s-worth of Biggie-related stories that celebrate his life and death, extras from the issue, including outtakes, as well as everyday hip-hop news and much more. And cop the special tribute issue when it hits stands on February 7.—XXL Staff (SOURCE)
Nursing a bum ankle, Shaun White had already pulled out of Slopestyle earlier this week, leaving many to wonder how he would fare in his signature event. However, as only he can do, White made his mark at Winter X Games Aspen Men’s Snowboard SuperPipe, winning gold and effectively solidifying a five-time repeat with a score of 94.00 on his very first run of the night. White could have mailed in his final run and taken a victory lap, but instead threw down the single greatest slew of tricks in Winter X Games history. Starting off the run with a towering 18-ft backside air, White stuck a frontside double cork 1080, a Cab double cork 1080, a frontside stalefish 540, a double McTwist 1260, and his signature frontside double cork 1260 before all was said and done, garnering the first perfect score of 100 in the history of Winter X.
“It’s unreal. I’ve been wanting that 100 forever. Thank you so much, everybody tonight,” White, a two-time Olympic halfpipe gold medalist, said (via ESPN). “I came here on a mission: I couldn’t compete in slope [the slope style event, because of a sprained ankle] and it kind of broke me. I didn’t know what to do. I was sitting around icing my ankle wondering if I could even ride tonight, and I kind of took out a little bit of that anxiety and anger that I couldn’t compete in slope in the pipe tonight.”
“Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water.” There can never be enough Bruce Lee, in movies especially. And now someone has made an entire documentary about his legacy and his spirit. It’s titled simply, I Am Bruce Lee, directed by Pete McCormack, and features a whole hell of a lot of celebrities, including Mickey Rourke, Ed O’Neill, Manny Pacquiao, Dana White, Black Eyed Peas’ Taboo, Jon Jones, Haywire’s Gina Carano and yes, even Kobe Bryant himself pops up in here. This looks like a kick ass doc for a martial arts legend, just exploring who he was and why he was such a legend, but we already know the reasons anyway. Check it out!

It’s safe to proclaim that 2011 was the year that brought Meek Mill into the spotlight as he signed with the formidable Maybach Music Group, was listed as on of the top Freshmen of 2011 in XXL‘s annual editorial, and provided club anthem “Ima Boss.” Bringing the year to an end, the Philadelphia-bred rap artist teamed up with Reebok during the holiday season and hooked up his former high school basketball team with fresh athletic gear for the season. Feeling good, the only thing left to do was grab the Dreamchasers crew and tear up the streets of Philly on bikes and ATV’s with his hometown family. (SOURCE)
